How often should a down comforter be cleaned?

Can you answer WordNerd’s question about Bedding?:

I have a down comforter, and I keep a duvet on it. I can wash the duvet in the washing machine, but the comforter is dry-clean only. How often should it be cleaned if it’s always in a duvet? Thanks!

Bedding Feedback: I wouldn’t bother ,,,Unless you felt it was dirty looking or smelled ,,who cares…? I have some for yrs…and never cleaned them yet ,,,I don’t think they are dirty ,,,as of now,,
washing only wears them out or fades them

Bedding Feedback: Honestly, it depends on the cover of the comforter itself. Check the tag, if it claims to be antimicrobial then you shouldn’t need to have it cleaned often. Especially since you have a duvet.

If it doesn’t have an allergen covering on it, then its probably best to launder every 3 months to rid the dust mites.

Bedding Feedback: If you have a extra capacity washing machine you can wash it with wollite on gentle and dry on delicate

Bedding Feedback: Once a month unless the u like the smell of cheese
Gentle soap & settings will do the trick.

Bedding Feedback: You have a duvet with a duvet cover on it. If you keep the duvet cover clean, I don’t think the duvet needs washing more than once a year. If you want, take it to the laundromat and use the large capacity washer and wash it. Put it in the dryer with a pair of clean tennis shoes. It’s going to take about an hour. DO NOT DRY CLEAN it. It’s waste of money!

Bedding Feedback: I have duvet covers on my four comforters; I wash the duvets about every two to four months ) I have never yet had the comforters cleaned, as long as they do not look dirty and smell clean, I assume they are clean. I have had all four comforters about three years.
After all the whole purpose of the duvets are to protect those heavy comforters and keep them clean.
