How often should you replace a down-alternative comforter?

Can you answer Jessica A’s question about Bedding?:

I have a down-alternative comforter that I have used with a duvet cover for about 4 years. I’ve had it professionally cleaned once, and have washed it once or twice in a commercial laundromat. It seems like it’s flatter and that the “puffiness” is gone. What is the typical life-expectancy of a down alternative comforter? Thanks!

Bedding Feedback: About every 3 years. The feathers will start to poke through and it will lose its puffiness

Bedding Feedback: I’ve had mine for 5 years, and I wash it about every 6 months. Mine is as it was when I bought it. Maybe all you need to do is spend a little more money and buy a better quality one. Mine is a Land’s End.

um, this person is asking about ‘down-alternative’ not ‘down’
