How do you get really stinky bedding clean?

Can you answer Shan’s question about Bedding?:
We had some family stay with us for a couple weeks- dogs and all. When they finally left, I went to clean the rooms they used, and the bedding was horribly smelly- a combo of unwashed body odor and smelly dog. I started to wash the bedding, but the first blanket I washed still smells! I used my regular detergent and dryer sheets. Any suggestions?

Bedding Feedback: Put a cup of ammonia in with your laundry detergent and then a cup of vinegar in your rinse cylce. You then, could either add you softener in another rinse cycle or put a couple of dryer sheets in the dryer along with the bedding.
Bedding Feedback: If they were that dirty I wouldn’t even bother washing anything. Throw them in the trash. Have your matress professionally cleaned and don’t invite them again.
Bedding Feedback: Spray everything with an enzyme odor remover and let it all air out for a good while. Hang the sheets and blankets out on the line before and after you re wash them.
I would even take the mattresses out side to sit in the sun/air if the weather permits. Keep them propped or on top of some crates or something so moisture from the earth won’t get into them though.
Good Luck!
Bedding Feedback: The first answer was the best one… adding a cup of ammonia to the load is what you need to do…. then be certain the odors are gone before adding any scented fabric softerns….
Good luck!
Bedding Feedback: I have never used ammonia in my laundry, because I am not sure how safe it is on fabrics. However, I have used baking soda to remove smells. I discovered this when I was living in an apartment and my baby peed all over her bedding one night. I couldn’t wash it immediately. The next day I washed it and it still stunk. Then I remembered reading somewhere about adding baking soda. I added a cup and the smell was gone.
Now, my kids have passed the bed wetting phase. But I still add baking soda to my loads if I have to leave them in the machine overnight. When I go to dry them, they don’t smell.
Bedding Feedback: good ole AMMONIA TRUST ME! I always use ammonia when i do my laundry. ammonia by itself smells horrible but it leaves your clothes cleaner and smelling very fresh.
